NIST CARISSMA Grants
CHIPS AI/AE for Rapid, Industry-informed Sustainable Semiconductor Materials and Processes
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) CARISSMA (CHIPS AI/AE for Rapid, Industry-informed Sustainable Semiconductor Materials and Processes) Grants program is a forward-looking initiative under the CHIPS and Science Act, aimed at advancing sustainable and innovative practices in the semiconductor industry. CARISSMA focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and artificial intelligence-enhanced (AI/AE) technologies to accelerate the discovery, development, and deployment of semiconductor materials and manufacturing processes that are efficient, scalable, and environmentally sustainable.
This grant program is designed to address critical challenges in the semiconductor supply chain, with a particular emphasis on sustainability, energy efficiency, and advanced material design. By fostering collaboration between industry leaders, research institutions, and government stakeholders, CARISSMA seeks to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and practical, industry-informed solutions.
Eligible applicants, including academic institutions, private companies, nonprofit organizations, and consortiums, are encouraged to propose projects that integrate AI-driven methodologies to optimize material performance, enhance manufacturing techniques, and reduce environmental impact. Key priorities include developing next-generation semiconductor materials, improving process efficiencies, and supporting workforce development to meet the evolving needs of the semiconductor sector.
The CARISSMA grants not only support technological innovation but also aim to secure the U.S.’s leadership in semiconductor manufacturing while promoting sustainable practices that align with global climate and environmental goals. By funding transformative projects, NIST empowers organizations to contribute to a robust, resilient, and eco-conscious semiconductor industry.
